Effectiveness of Group Counseling for Children from Dysfunctional Family
SUN CHOI(최선)박사학위 논문 / Oral Roberts University

A dysfunctional family means a family that has problems of distorted communication, low self-esteem, unstable emotion, distrust, and a wrong view of God. The children in a dysfunctional family have been brought up by taking these unhealthy religious educations physically, psychologically and mentally. Since they are emotionally unstable, they sometimes attack their friends and are unstable in their relationship with others. Also, they do not trust others.
This projecfs purpose is to study the effectiveness of group counseling for the children of dysfunctional families that face the problems mentioned above. The researcher educated the children in the dysfunctional family to correct the distorted communication, low self-esteem, unstable expression of their emotion, trust, and wrong view of God, which are considered as the causes of dysfunctional family. The researcher watched carefully how the participants developed in their understanding of other people in their family and the church. In the group counseling method, the researcher trained the participants how to communicate with verbal expressions and without verbal expressions. He trained them with Bible study, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), watching movies, reading therapy, drawing therapy, expression of anger, group games, making the tabernacle, etc.
The researcher used the following methods to measure the effectiveness of the group counseling of the children in a dysfunctional family. He gauged the 20 participants in the Treatment Group and the other 20 participants in the Control Group twice before and after the training (pretest and posttest) through the questionnaire. First, he taught the participants with the teaching materials which were made based on the five hypotheses to increase the understanding. Second, he studied the biblical and theological background of group counseling of the dysfunctional family. He studied the historical background of group counseling of the dysfunctional family.
